Barátság Hungarian Dance & Music Camp

Celebrating 20 Years!!
Barátság 2002 is bursting back to celebrate 20 years since our first camp in 1982. We encourage all the original campers (even if you don’t dance any more!) to come for our 20 Year Celebration Party. We have an outstanding lineup of some our favorites to help us celebrate, promising a camp of exceptional teaching, incomparable music, and unforgettable memories. Starting with the return of our friends, Szilárd and Ildikó, we will have the opportunity to learn dances from Válaszút in the Mezőség region, which itself ranks high among the all-time popular cycles. The members of the Ökrös Band are all veterans of many camps and táncház’s worldwide. With additions of Éva, Álmos and Gergely, and the massive repertoire represented by these fine musicians, we are presenting an exceptional, all star line-up that will be able to satisfy every need, even the pickiest ones!
Barátság has typically been a camp for Hungarian dance and music
enthusiasts. However, as we have seen the general interest in Tuvan music
grow, including a strong interest among Hungarians in their eastern roots,
in particular, in the Tuvan music, we saw an opportunity to open our doors
and broaden the now 20 year Baratsag experience.
We decided we could support the Tuvan artists by making a camp situation for
students to study with master artists in an intensive and focused
environment. This kind of approach towards learning traditional music is
very much in keeping with the Barátság philosophy towards the preservation
and presentation of cultural heritage. In addition, our spacious facility
can easily accommodate the Tuvan Camp, even offering the opportunity for
some "cross-cultural" experiences.
For our 2002 Camp, Barátság has teamed up with Tuvan musicians Igor
Koshkendei & Alexander Bapa to give beginning and advanced instruction in
Tuvan throat singing techniques as well as instrumental music. The Tuvan
Camp will occur simultaneously with the Baratsag Hungarian Dance and Music
Camp. Some "cross-over" participation is encouraged!
Lastly, we are now reaping the rewards of our persistence in offering a
Children’s Program that includes daily classes in Hungarian music and
dancing. Our efforts to involve the children at camp in activities similar
to those that draw their parents have kindled their own desire to
participate. This has been the greatest reward to all of us as we witness
the transition of traditions from our generation to the next.
