OUR PROGRAM

The Dance Cycle:  Válaszút (Mezőség)

In keeping with the current trend in Hungary of focusing on a single village, Barátság 2002 will concentrate on the dances from Válaszút, a village in the Central Mezőség region of Transylvania (near Bonchida), also birthplace of famed ethnomusicologist/ singer, Zoltán Kallós.  This village has a rich and varied heritage of dance, music and other folk customs.  Teaching during the week will present a crosscut of the Hungarian, Romanian and Gypsy traditions and will include Men’s dances, a Foursome, and several Couple Dances.  Their intense focus on Válaszút over the last several years has made Szilárd and Ildikó the unquestionable experts and offers us this unique opportunity for an unparalleled, in-depth study of the dances and music traditions of Válaszút.

NOTE: Barátság believes that all our campers should have the same opportunity to learn the Válaszút cycle from Szilárd and Ildikó.  Our daily schedule will assure that all levels of dancers, even beginners, will have the chance to study with our featured teachers.

 Music Instruction: Válaszút (Mezőség)

The Music Students will also focus primarily on the material of Válaszút during the week.  Teaching will be at all levels and will include individual and ensemble classes as needed.

Éva will offer singing in a comfortable Group Class setting every day focusing primarily on material from Válaszút.  Intermediate and Advanced level singing with Éva or Gergely will be scheduled by request.

Hand Image CHILDREN’S PROGRAM

Barátság continues to offer our well-developed Children’s Program in our commitment to create a fun and meaningful environment for the younger population at Camp.  The customary arts and crafts projects and nature hikes with the local naturalist, coupled with supervised excursions to the swimming hole, are complemented with daily dance classes with Kovács and Michele and singing and folk games with Éva.  Éva, Kovács and Michele have all had several years experience teaching Hungarian songs and dances to children.

We encourage all ages to take part in the Children’s Program and have been delighted to see that many of the children are now participating in the evening as well.  Based on requests from the children themselves, our evening dance schedule allows our Young Campers the opportunity to dance together with the adults to the live music early in the evening,
